Traditional Turkish Handicrafts / Ebru Art
Ebru art, a traditional Turkish handicraft with deep roots, is an aesthetically and technically rich art form based on the principle of transferring unique patterns created on the surface of water onto paper. In this context, an applied workshop on ebru art was held on May 6, 2026, with the participation of students from the Graphic Design Department and the Physical Education and Sports Department of the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Bandırma Onyedi Eylül University.
This event aimed to experience artistic production processes through an interdisciplinary approach and to integrate traditional arts into contemporary educational environments. During the workshop, participants gained theoretical knowledge about the historical development of ebru art, the materials used, and techniques, as well as having the opportunity to produce original patterns through individual practice. This process contributed to both the development of students' manual skills and the deepening of their aesthetic perceptions.
The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Emel Uzuner, a faculty member from the Graphic Design Department, and ebru artist Zekiye Tatlı, creating a high-quality learning environment. Instructors conveyed the intricacies of traditional techniques to the participants while also guiding them towards developing creative forms of expression. Ebru artist Zekiye Tatlı defines ebru art as "a unique form of expression where patience, balance, and aesthetics simultaneously manifest on the surface of water."
This workshop not only increased students' awareness of cultural heritage but also made a significant contribution to bringing traditional arts together with contemporary design concepts. Furthermore, the gathering of students from different academic disciplines on a common artistic ground provided a fruitful learning experience in terms of collaboration and interaction.
